Wedding DIY /// Watercolor Bunting Cake Topper

Wedding DIY /// Watercolor Bunting Cake Topper /// By Faith Towers Provencher of Design Fixation
In case you’re new here, I’m getting married in a few months and I’ve taken it upon myself to make practically all the decor for the wedding. Not really, but I have most likely bitten off more than I can chew. So we’ll see how that turns out 😉
I recently made a cake topper and documented the process for you guys and I’m sharing it today. It’s made with adorable little watercolor bunting flags and a gold paint pen. And it’s really quite easy to make! So let’s get started.
Here’s what you’ll need for this project:
Begin by painting rectangles with the watercolor in a variety of different shades within the color scheme for your wedding or party. Do quite a few, so you can pick the ones that came out the best (and in case you mess up on any letters later).

Next, once the watercolor is dry, cut them into rectangles and then trim triangular shapes from the bottoms to turn them into bunting flags.

Now draw your initials on the flags (or a name or phrase if it’s for a party). If you’re not a pro when it comes to hand-lettering, pull up a favorite font on the computer and copy it onto the flag with a pencil and then go over it with ink.

Now flip the flags over, making sure they are in the opposite order that you want them to appear. Put a line of hot glue along the top edge and place the bakers twine into the glue. Let it dry for a few seconds, then do the same with the rest of the flags. There should be about 3/8″ of space between each flag.

Last, tie the twine to the tops of the skewers. You may want to use a dab of super glue on the back to make sure nothing moves. A small dab of hot glue would work too, if you don’t have super glue. Trim the ends, and you’re finished!
This is a great way to add a custom feel to your cake, rather than just popping on a generic store-bought cake topper. Not only can you control the colors, but the monograms add an extra special touch.

You could also make smaller flags if you want more of them, but just make sure that they are still easily legible from afar.

Feel free to post any questions you may have in the comments section. And do post photos of your version of this project on Instagram and tag it with #mydesignfixation if you get a chance. Happy bunting-making friends!
