4 Ways to Incorporate the Black and White Interior Trend

Today we have a guest post from the talented Emily Creswick of Zillow. She’s sharing lots of helpful tips on how to incorporate my favorite color combo, black and white, into your home. Take it away, Emily!

As interior trends come and go, the powerful and contrasting black and white color combination remains a popular choice for home decorating. Described as both classic and cutting edge, the style remains prevalent due to its never-ending versatility and ability to blend so easily throughout the home.

Adding this striking look is a great way to refresh dull rooms and living spaces. Here are four ways to incorporate trending black and white styling.

The Kitchen

Refreshing a drab and boring kitchen with lustrous black and white elements allows residents to enjoy a rejuvenated, chic space while creating broad appeal for future homebuyers. For simple updates, install new monotone appliances and add printed black and white accessories such as floor mats and tea towels. If budget allows, refresh the flooring, counter tops and wall space, too. Oversized white tiles are a trending kitchen look as well as black and white geometric tile patterns for backsplashes. For an ultra-glam look, update countertops using black or white granite and pair with stainless steel appliances to complement the glimmer in the stone.

The Living Room

Keep things airy and open by removing heavy window treatments and replacing them with white curtains or painted wooden shutters. Update worn out pillows by adding new covers in trending prints such as herringbone, Greek key, ikat and houndstooth. Include decorative black and white accessories on the coffee table and TV cabinet. For a softer look, blend the black and white theme with neutral tones and natural elements. Opt for wood furniture, glass tables and metal accents. Add a shaggy off-white floor rug and couch throw for balanced texture. For a livelier look, mix a pop of color with black and white elements such as fresh flowers or colored wall prints.

The Bedroom

Muted black and white tones such as slate-gray and off-white are easy on the eye, comfy and relaxing in the bedroom. As the bed is the focal point of the room, start the update by adding a new duvet cover in either off-white or gray, and add contrasting printed pillows and cushions. Keep the space tidy and minimalistic by adding monochromatic boxes to store stray items. For a personal touch, add black and white photos in frames around the room or as a part of a simple gallery wall above the bed.

The Bathroom

Adding a black and white scheme is a great way to modernize the bathroom too. A new white towel set offers an instant refresh for the room while a chic black-and-white-printed shower curtain adds character. Incorporate some black and white functional accessories to the countertop including a toothbrush holder and soap dispenser. For a glam look, combine black-and-white-printed towels with reflective chrome accessories. In smaller bathrooms, be careful not to overwhelm spaces with too many prints or excessive amounts of black, as this can cause spaces to feel even smaller.

The black and white look is a popular yet sleek trend sure to be around for years to come. Make the investment of updating interior design now to enjoy as residents and with guests, and reap the returns of a polished space when it comes time to sell.
